The North America Nebula or NGC 7000 is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to the bright star Deneb, approximately 1800 light years from Earth. NGC7000 has a fairly low surface brightness with an apparent visual magnitude of 6, but it's quite large covering an area of approximately 3° on the summer sky.
The North America Nebula and the nearby Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) are two parts of the same interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen (H II region) that is separated by dark lanes of dust that lies in front of the region between the two nebulae, making them appear as if they where separate.
The nebula was discovered by William Herschel on October 24, 1786, from England.
