The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant in the constellation of Cygnus. The nebulas distance from Earth is not precisely known, but Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) data supports a distance of about 1,470 light-years.
Deriving its name from its delicate, wrapped filamentary structures, the beautiful Veil Nebula is one of the best-known supernova remnants.
It formed from the violent death of a star twenty times the mass of the Sun that exploded about 8000 years ago. The brightly coloured cloud of glowing debris spans approximately 110 light-years and cover an area roughly 3 degrees diameter in our sky with an integrated magnitude of 7. The fast-moving blast wave from the ancient explosion is plowing into a wall of cool, denser interstellar gas, emitting light. The Veil Nebula’s colourful appearance is generated by variations in the temperatures and densities of the chemical elements present.
The nebula was discovered on 1784 September 5 by William Herschel.
